Announcing the winners of Arts Award's Photography Competition

Written by Cathy Thornhill | 01 Jul 2021

Arts Award's first photography competition, which took place earlier this year, offered an opportunity for centres to highlight the breadth of their Arts Award provision and showcase the creativity of their delivery. Open to both young people and advisers, by entering the competition there was the chance for photos to be featured in Arts Award’s national materials and to win vouchers to support their centre.

We were delighted to receive some fantastic entries, from a wide range of centres and representing a variety of artforms.  We would like to thank everyone who entered the competition, and also warmly congratulate our winners, who are:

  • Agnieszka Plata, student (digital art/mixed or other artforms category)
  • Carla Caig, Artizey (visual art category)
  • Charlotte Jones, The Three Rivers Learning Trust (drama/theatre category)
  • Francesca Shepherd, VICTA (digital art/mixed or other artforms category)
  • Rafa Kelly, student (music category)

The judges also awarded a Special Mention to photos taken by the following advisers:

The competition judges from Trinity's UK and Ireland team were: Kat Stapley-Smith, Sector Support Manager (Primary, SEND & Alternative Provision); Layne Harrod, Sector Support Manager (Arts & Youth); Cathy Thornhill, Marketing and Communications Manager.

We were also very pleased to welcome to the panel special guest judge, Mary Strickson - professional photographer and illustrator, regular Arts Award Voice contributor and trained Arts Award adviser. See Mary's work at: thewholepicture.co.uk

The winning photos....

STUDENT WINNER | Digital art/mixed or other artforms category:
Agnieszka Plata

Judges’ comments: ‘A well composed photograph, making good use of depth of field. We like that the heritage setting clearly comes across and the creative approach of turning the camera on the viewer.’

ADVISER WINNER | Visual art category:
Carla Caig, Artizey

Judges’ comments: ‘The colours of this photo really pop! There are lots of things we like about this photograph: the composition, the boys look really engaged and the angle of the camera puts the viewer on their level.’

ADVISER WINNER | Drama/theatre category:
Charlotte Jones, The Three Rivers Federation

Judges’ comments: ‘We like that this photo shows a backstage aspect of theatre, which can be easily overlooked. There is a lot of visual interest due to the vibrancy of the colour and textures. There is a nice interplay between the young people and seeing the panel in situ helps to build context.’

ADVISER WINNER | Digital art/mixed or other artforms category:
Francesca Shepherd, VICTA

Judges’ comments: ‘This group are clearly all enjoying their task and have a great interplay. The composition is well balanced and the uncluttered background helps the figures come to the fore. There is a great energy about this photo.’

STUDENT WINNER | Music category:

Judges’ comments: ‘This photo has a dynamic feel and it fits well with Arts Award’s usual style of photos. We like the fact that the guitarist is playing outside his home, it makes playing an instrument feel very accessible and the brickwork in the background adds visual interest.’
